VisionWalk 2008: Will you walk the Walk?

Our local VisionWalk, which raises money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, is coming up in June. So I am getting serious about organizing my walking team and finding support. I would like to ask that you consider helping out your local walk in some way; with your feet, with your checkbook or even with your camera.

I am organizing Team Eureka for this year's VisionWalk in Raleigh, NC. If you will be in the Triangle area, please consider walking with us. You can join the team, help us raise money or assist us in whatever way you would like.

New D40X

I just cracked open the box and put together a new camera, the Nikon D40X. I love it, though I can not wait to a second lens. As good as the kit lens may be, I want to try to the new VR telephoto.

I read way too many reviews, deciding between the D40X, the D80 and the XTi. I went to the stores to try them out. I checked prices. I thought. I debated. I went back and forth. I decided.

The D40X does not have the features of the D80, but they use the same lenses, the same MPS and the feature set is not hugely different. As some reviewer pointed out, camera bodies are improving so quickly that the D40X's descendants only a couple of years down the road will outdo most of the current line of SLR bodies. So money might be better spent in lenses, which has a slower obsolescence cycle.

The XTi seems almost identical to the D40X in performance and features, so the decision was very hard. But I like the more intuitive and easier to read menus in the Nikon, so the Nikon it was.

I have already started posting pictures from the new camera and more soon.

Cool. My photos have been profiled in an article in RE:UP Magazine.

A few months ago, I was contacted my the photo editor of a 'pop culture' magazine about a possible profile of 'blind photographers'. I did not think anyting would come of it, but I was wrong. Here is my piece from the article, though I recommend you buy the issue. Pretty cool, eh? The magazine itself is beautifully done, so is worth buying when it comes out.

Visionwalk is an unofficial Flickr group about the fund raiser sponsored by the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The walk will be done in several cities across the states. Check www.visionwalk.org to see what cities are participating in your state.

The goal of this group is to bring awareness to the general public about the eye diseases that affect so many; macular degeneration, Retinitis Pigmetosa, Usher, Stargardt's among many others. We hope to encourage people to get involved by either sending someone to a Visionwalk (as a walker, a photographer or both), volunteering time or sponsoring someone in doing a walk.
